Endress Hauser Digital non-glass pH sensor Ceramax CPS341D

The Ceramax CPS341D is a digital non-glass pH sensor from Endress+Hauser, engineered as the long-runner for hygienic applications in the food and life sciences industries. Featuring a shatterproof pH-sensitive enamel coating on a steel carrier and Memosens digital technology, it guarantees long-term stability and minimal maintenance in demanding sanitary processes.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Shatterproof Non-Glass Design: The sensor body is made of steel with a pH-sensitive enamel coating, eliminating the risk of glass breakage—a critical safety advantage for food and pharmaceutical production where glass contamination is intolerable.

  • Long-Term Stability: The enamel pH-sensitive surface shows almost no drift or aging, enabling stable measurements for many years. In most applications, annual calibration with the product is sufficient.

  • Hygienic Design for CIP/SIP: The sensor is suitable for Clean-in-Place and Sterilization-in-Place processes, with an aseptic ground diaphragm forming the interface to the medium. The electrolyte is packed in sterile PE bottles that can be replaced without impacting sterility.

  • High Mechanical Strength and Corrosion Resistance: The glass-lined steel carrier provides mechanical stability against abrasive substances and turbulent flow from agitators. The sensor resists extreme corrosion in strong acids and is unaffected by organic solvents or proteins.

  • Large pH Measuring Surface: The pH-sensitive enamel area is much larger than that of a glass electrode, enabling precision measurements in process solutions where other methods are limited, and making it insensitive to soiling.

  • Memosens Digital Technology: Non-contact, inductive signal transmission eliminates moisture and corrosion issues, enables laboratory pre-calibration, and stores sensor data for predictive maintenance.

The sensor’s construction is fundamentally different from conventional glass electrodes. The carrier material is made of steel, protected against corrosion by a special resistant, anti-adhesive enamel coating. The yellow pH-sensitive enamel is fused on the lower end in a circular shape, providing a pH-sensitive area much larger than that of a glass electrode. Because there is no internal buffer, the enamel measuring electrode is directly connected to a metal contact, simplifying the sensor design and contributing to its long-term stability.

The Ag/AgCl reference is integrated in the head of the electrode, with a conductive electrolyte connection between the electrolyte vessel, reference part, and product established via a tube and a hygienically formed ground diaphragm. The KCl electrolyte is supplied in sterile PE bottles placed in a stainless steel pressure vessel. The pressure inside the electrolyte system must always be kept above the process pressure. Thanks to this sophisticated construction, the Ceramax CPS341D shows almost no drift or aging, and in most applications, annual calibration is sufficient.

The sensor is suitable for Clean-in-Place and Sterilization-in-Place processes, making it ideal for hygienic applications. It resists extreme corrosion in strong acids and is not affected by organic solvents or proteins. The glass-lined steel carrier provides mechanical stability against abrasive substances and turbulent flow from agitators, and the sensor can be installed at any orientation, even upside down. The Ceramax is installed directly in pipes or tank nozzles without the need for an assembly.

The CPS341D is used across a range of applications including food production with highly pasty media, beverage production and filling, quality control, pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, fermentation, and water treatment. Its non-glass, shatterproof design makes it particularly valuable where glass breakage poses a contamination risk, and its large pH-sensitive surface ensures reliable measurement even in viscous or challenging media.

Memosens digital technology provides non-contact, inductive signal transmission that eliminates moisture and corrosion issues, enables laboratory pre-calibration, and stores calibration data and sensor history directly in the sensor head for predictive maintenance. The sensor is precalibrated when delivered and combines maximum process and data integrity with simple operation.

The sensor features an integrated NTC 30 kΩ temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensation. It has a diameter of 12 mm (0.47 inch) and a shaft length of 120 mm (4.72 inch), with different hygienic process connectors available. The connection uses a contactless, inductive, digital connection head with Memosens technology, rated IP68 for ingress protection. The sensor is compliant with FDA and EU 1935/2004 regulations for food contact materials.
